More of the same, and some more women too, and bonus birdsong.
Birdsong via Olivier Messiaen: “Abyss of the birds: Clarinet alone. The abyss is Time with its sadness, its weariness. The birds are the opposite to Time; they are our desire for light, for stars, for rainbows, and for jubilant songs.”
That August heavy heady summering thread, thirsting for the light relief and free flight of birdsong, was written while here in Vancouver we were under increasingly dense wildfire smoke, and mindful of man-made catastrophe. The thread ended with nearly three hours’ birdsong via Yvonne Loriod performing Messiaen’s “Catalogue d’oiseaux”: balancing man-made destruction with woman-performed, man-composed, bird-inspired—echoing, perpetuating, and haunting and haunted—creativity. In memory of lost birds, sleeping languages, & the silenced: long may #MedievalTwitter continue to support & work for them.
